hey, kids.

as i told you last time we spoke, 2012 is turning out to be pretty good so far. i'm hoping to receive a copy of my poster for feist sometime soon in the mail... and a check!!! yay!!

i am still totally blown away that my submission won. that's sooooo cool!!!!!

anyhow, i've got a couple of new projects going on here. right now i'm building a website for a super cute boutique in the marina (s.f.) called fawn. if you live in the bay area, make your way over to the marina and check it out. it's at the corner of fillmore and union. the website is in progress right now, but i posted up an address and a phone number for the time being at www.boutiquefawn.com.

another project i've got going on is a logo design (well, 2 actually) for my mom's non-profit, equestrian connection. they're a therapy center for disabled children and adults focusing in therapy on horseback. since my mom is superhuman, she is putting together a team to race in the chicago triathlon this year to benefit the program. she also puts on an annual trail race (20k, 10k, 5k) for the program. i'm making some logos for the race and for the tri team. once we get those finalized, i'll post 'em up. probably in the next week or two here.

so those are my official projects at the moment. in the meantime, i'm pulling together a whole bunch more for creative allies... something about the 'year of the doors', bluegrass nation, and sf music-tech summit. most recently, univision put a call out through creative allies for an identity for a music festival they are launching this year to be held in dallas and los angeles. this was my submission...

two more bits of news i'd like to share:

starting in about 2 weeks, i'll be taking another illustration class with the lovely caitlin kuhwald at cca. stoked! be prepared for weekly-ish postings with some work from there.

also, i want to share that i have officially applied to grad school for this fall. all four of my applications are completed, paid for, and sent off into the grad school ether... there my be a really cool change in my future. keep your fingers crossed for some good things to come.

so i've been living in oakland since june now. it's pretty silly that i haven't made it down to the oakland art murmur until just now. it's our local first friday art walk here in oakland, and it is quite a scene! a girlfriend of mine (and jewelry-making partner in crime), smallfry came over today for a crafternoon jewelry making session, and we headed over to the art murmur after. hopefully soon, you'll be able to find us there selling our wares :)

so on the 2-d front, i stumbled across a local artist this evening (actually via the internet, not the art murmur) who struck me so i wanted to share. her name is renee castro. here are some images of her work:

her portraiture is just lovely. and i really enjoy her selective/minimal use of color.

i'm on a whole bunch of design newsletter lists and i have tons of art/design feeds on my google reader. today this article caught my attention from imprint weekly: Occupy! Design! Communication!
it discusses the dynamics of communication in the occupy movement outside of twitter and facebook; symbols, signs, and literature of the movement. the thing that really stood out to me in this article from a design perspective is that "...a logo is not needed and will not be created by a single person (no matter how great a designer they are), it will have to grow organically as the movement's message does."
i think it's a fantastic point of view. as a movement that is for the people and by the people, one logo by one person or even a group of people is not going to cut it. since the movement is constantly growing and evolving, it will see a whole series of symbols (visual and otherwise) that harken back to the united exclamations of the protests. cool stuff. i just wanted to share :)

i'm so loving my classes at cca. i still have yet to post any of my jewelry work up, but i will once i have more finished work to show...

my metalsmithing class is on saturday mornings. while i am pretty opposed to waking up early, especially on my 'days off', this class has really made 8 am a lot easier to stomach on a saturday morning. right now, i am working mostly in copper and silver; making bezel settings for stones and a silver ring. two of the set stones (a poppy jasper and a chrysocolla/malachite) are being made into pendants, and i'll be setting a little trilobite onto the silver ring next week.

the theme of 'metals' is being carried over into my illustration work right now too. my next assignment for my illustration class coincides with a contest i just entered through creative allies; a vinyl album cover (for class) and a tour poster (for the contest) for feist's new album "metals". i've got a taste for you here:

the poster (top) has been submitted and the deadline closed at midnight. the album cover is still working, thanks to the fantastic working email critiques my class has been having over the last week. the final album cover will be due on tuesday.

if you haven't heard the album yet, i highly recommend it!

i've attached a lovely little video from the black cab sessions of one of my favorite songs on the album.

since i last posted, a lot has happened. dave and i had a grand adventure that totaled seven months and covered some of the u.s.-of-a. and the rest spanned six countries in south america. to put it in a nutshell, it was a life goal realized.

it's not very well organized or updated since our internet abilities were very limited during most of the journey, but you can find some fun photos and stories, as well as some videos of things we were exposed to & inspired by along the way. if we can pull it together, we'll continue to update as we have finally loaded all of the thousands of pictures safely onto our computers. i'll see what i can do for you in that realm.
that said, now that we've returned, we've relocated to curiously sketchy and lovely west oakland. i am tossing around the idea of graduate studies and have begun taking extended education classes through california college of the arts. i'm currently taking two classes; everything but editorial, which is a fantastic illustration course encompassing all but editorial work (editorial being magazine and newspaper), and the other is an intro to jewelry and metalsmithing course.
it has been brilliantly inspiring to be back in a learning environment, and it has helped to light a fire under my artistically sleepy ass (which is no longer sleepy might i add).
lately, i have been painting and drawing a lot for the class, as well as learning some fun new photoshop tricks to benefit my cross-media exploration.

my illustration course is taught by the lovely and inspiring caitlin kuhwald. our first assignment was a wine label for the now closed (as far as i understand) periscope cellars located in emeryville.

the assignment called for a label that was solely an illustration with no text just so we weren't distracted by the prospect of trying to incorporate text into the image.
i'm relatively satisfied with how it turned out, but will be reworking it to my own specs that will include a diecut and text. i'll keep you posted...
here's the final piece for class mounted on a bottle.

the second assignment that we were given was a fashion illustration. the theme of the illustration was food. naturally, i chose mushrooms (chanterelles to be specific) since i have fostered this bizarre fascination with the shape and texture of edible (and inedible) fungi. i am reworking this assignment as well since i'm not totally satisfied with the deadline result. but i'll share what i turned in for critique with you anyhow...

we'll see where the rework goes, but currently i'm feeling pretty good about where it's headed. i'll put it up when i'm done :)

one last project i've done lately is a website for tracy dillen-massillon, a birth doula and lactation consultant as well as a mother of two and overall awesome, powerful woman. you can find her website here --> the milk years

so that's where i've been at lately. i just wanted to drop by and give an update since it has been ages. i'll try to keep it up a little better now that we're stateside (and i'm working) again. next time i'll put up some photos from my jewelry class along with these re-worked projects.

i am entering 2010 with the ongoing portrait series, but feel that there are new things on my horizon...

i am obsessed with line- i have been for a long time. it is the curiosity and foundation of large bodies and my best work to date. but lately, a transformation has begun to take place. i am developing an intense fascination with color and shape...

i'm also painting again. we'll see what happens.

i'm finally all linked up! this whole 'adding a blog' thing has been quite a learning process in my dreamweaver 8 adventure.
and it has only just begun.
